Diego Velázquez – a master of the sumptuous Baroque, whose paintings were unafraid of emptiness, the king's personal painter, who portrayed the people, an artist who held high positions in the royal administration, and the creator of some of the most enigmatic works in art history. And above all, a pioneer of modern painting. His works captivated Édouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, and Salvador Dalí. The latter even borrowed the distinctive mustache that became his trademark from his idol's self-portraits. "Velázquez and His Secret" demonstrates the influence Velázquez had on generations of artists, explores the Spaniard's oeuvre, rife with hidden meanings, and attempts to approach the secret of his genius. The works of this most important European painter – alongside Caravaggio and Goya – are found in the world's finest collections. Together with the filmmakers of "Velázquez and His Mystery," we wander the halls of the Musée d'Orsay, the Prado, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while curators, artists, conservators, and historians explain the artist's phenomenon. At the center of this story is the famous "Ladies and Gentlemen," a painting that captivates with its unusual perspective, intricate composition, and phenomenal technique, and to this day defies interpretation. Many are still searching for what Velázquez saw—this is how the filmmakers describe this enigmatic masterpiece. But "Velázquez and His Mystery" is not only about works and experts, but also unique, surprising recordings extracted from television archives, in which artists such as Dali, Bacon, and the philosopher Michel Foucault discuss their passion for Velázquez. Julian Schnabel is also one of the documentary's subjects. And for each of them, the Spaniard remained a thoroughly contemporary artist.
