The second half of the 19th century in Victorian England. A brilliant young surgeon, Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), meets a man with an unusual body deformity, who, because of his appearance, is condemned to a humiliating life of a circus freak. He is John Merrick (John Hurt), suffering from a rare genetic disease, known to fairground audiences throughout the country as the "Elephant Man". Doctor Treves, who was the first to treat him as a normal person, fights to free Merrick from the misery of his environment and provide him with a decent life.
