Gounod's opera, based on Goethe's immortal drama, remains one of the most popular in the history of the genre. The myth of a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for youth and love has captivated audiences worldwide for centuries, regardless of the author who retells it, and there have been many. The Vienna State Opera presents this classic in a modern and at times provocative setting. The production, created during the pandemic (2021), combines respect for operatic tradition with a bold, contemporary artistic vision. The latest production of this opera, prepared by the legendary Wiener Staatsoper, has been hailed by the media as "devilishly good." The performance also delights with a "fiendishly talented" cast, featuring Polish bass Adam Palka in the role of Mephistopheles. Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez will sing the title role, while Australian soprano Nicole Car will sing Marguerite. In this remarkable work, love and passion intertwine with the drama of temptation and fall.
