"Fuori" is an electrifying portrait of the distinguished Italian writer Goliarda Sapienza, one of the most extraordinary women of the 1980s – a rebellious outsider who defied all categorization and waited years to be discovered. Screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Mario Martone's latest film ("Nostalgia") is a story of friendship, sisterhood, and the need for freedom. The film's protagonist is a mature, liberated woman – a thief, lover, and unfulfilled writer. To make ends meet, Goliarda (Valeria Golino) is willing to risk a great deal. When she finally ends up in prison, she befriends younger women. After her release, during the scorching Roman summer, she will be reborn thanks to them. Against the backdrop of the turbulent realities of 1980s Italy, shadowed by ideology, repression, and disillusionment, "Freedom Italian Style" questions the possibility of authentic freedom. Can a woman find her place in a world that tries to lock her into one of its patriarchal roles?
