Retransmitted from the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (remastered version). This incredibly funny operetta, in Laurent Pelly's iconic production, stars the phenomenal soprano Felicity Lott for the first time on the big screen. We present the 2000 production in a remastered version. Offenbach was a master at writing operettas based on Greek myths and traditional fairy tales ("Orpheus in the Underworld" and "Bluebeard"). His "ancient" and "fantastical" works always humorously portrayed the people of his time, including the "high society" of the Second Empire with all their comic flaws. Nearly 150 years later, a similar vision of staged play with reality was presented at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris by director Laurent Pelly and conductor Marc Minkowski. In this production, which became the standard for staging "The Beautiful Helena" for years to come, the humor flows from the idea of setting the operetta in the imagination of a sleeping housewife. The titular Helena (Felicity Lott) is a bored, modern-day housewife who dreams of being the most beautiful woman in the world, a woman fought over by heroes. We present the 2000 recording of the performance in a remastered version: the image and sound have been digitally restored to even more fully capture the colors and tone of this Parisian production.
