The story follows Kate Cooper, who after a life of risking her life is now safely working to study storm patterns in New York City. At the urging of a friend named Javi, Kate is back in the field to test a groundbreaking invention. They are joined by the charming but reckless Tyler Owens, an internet celebrity. He chases storms with his noisy crew, and their motto is the more dangerous, the better. As the storm season intensifies, unprecedented weather phenomena occur. Multiple storm systems converge in central Oklahoma, and the heroes must fight for their lives.
